Why am I being asked for photo ID?
FINTRAC REQUIREMENTS Collecting Personal Information Before dealing with individuals when buying, selling or leasing any type of Real Estate. Effective June 23rd, 2008, Real Estate Agents and Brokers must keep a Identification Information Records for every real estate transaction they are involved in.
The Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada, or FINTRAC, collects, analyzes and discloses financial information and intelligence on suspected money laundering and terrorist financing activities. It was created as part of a Canadian government initiative to fight money laundering and terrorist financing, both domestically and internationally. Businesses and industries who must report to FINTRAC are required to “know their clients” and asking for ID is one way to do that.
Can I see some ID please? The Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (PCMLTFA) requires financial institutions and others covered by the legislation to identify customers who conduct financial transactions such as: depositing funds, purchasing a life insurance policy or buying a money order. The Act also requires them to keep records and identify their clients.
Why do I have to show ID? The business you are dealing with is required by law to ask you for ID. By providing this information when requested, you will ensure that financial institutions and others can meet their legal obligation, and support the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing.
Money laundering Money laundering is the process used to disguise the source of money or assets derived from criminal activity. This illegal activity can include drug trafficking, smuggling, fraud, extortion and corruption. Criminals must launder the profits and proceeds from these crimes to be able to enjoy them. The scope of criminal proceeds is significant—the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimated that some $500 billion (U.S.) is laundered worldwide each year. Money laundering occurs worldwide, and the techniques used are numerous and can be very sophisticated. Technological advances in e-commerce, the global diversification of financial markets and new financial products provide further opportunities to launder money and obscure the trail leading back to the underlying crime.
Terrorist financing Terrorist financing operates somewhat differently from money laundering but no less insidiously. While terrorist groups do generate funds from criminal activities such as drug trafficking and arms smuggling, they also frequently obtain revenue through legal means. Supporters of terrorist causes may, for example, raise funds from their local communities by hosting events or membership drives. In addition, some charity or relief organizations may unwittingly become the conduit through which donors contribute funds that may eventually be used to commit a terrorist act. The funds are then routed to the recipient terrorist organizations through both informal networks and the formal financial system. Terrorist activities constitute threats to our country’s safety and security. An effective response involves, among other things, efforts to detect and curtail the flow of money needed to finance such activities.
What tpye of ID do I have to provide? Under the PCMLTFA, you are required to provide valid identification such as a birth certificate, a driver’s license, or similar type of document.
What other information will be required? Under the PCMLTFA, you are required to provide full legal name, address, date of birth, and occupation.

 DO NOT CALL LIST (DNCL)
The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is responsible for the National Do-Not-Call List (DNCL), which contains the names and telephone numbers of the consumers who do not want to receive unsolicited telephone calls from telemarketers.
Telemarketing is the use of telephony technology (telephone, cellphone, fax, etc.) to make unsolicited telephone calls or send unsolicited messages to consumers for the purpose of solicitation. Solicitation is selling or promoting a product or service, or soliciting money.
The object of the National DNCL is to provide a way for consumers to prevent telemarketers from calling them without consumers having to deal with individual telemarketers and their do-not-call lists. Telemarketers will not be permitted to call any of the numbers on the National Do-Not-Call List (DNCL), unless they already have an existing business relationship with the consumer or individual. (Please see the definition of existing business relationship in the CREA booklet on Page 2)
The federal legislation creating the framework for Canada’s National Do-Not-Call List was passed in 2005. On December 21st, 2007, the CRTC awarded a five-year contract to Bell Canada to operate the National DNCL, and announced the list would be active on September 30th, 2008. The operator is responsible for registering numbers, providing telemarketers with up-to-date versions of the National DNCL, and receiving consumer complaints about telemarketing calls.
Consumers can register up to three different numbers on the list, and have to renew that list every three years. There is no cost for getting onto the list. Telemarketers are required to monitor the National DNCL and remove any numbers they find on it from their calling lists. Telemarketers have to pay for access to the list.

HOMELIFE REALTY CENTRE BECOMES ROYAL LePAGE REALTY CENTRE
|
|
|
On September 22nd, 2008, Homelife/Realty Centre Corp., became Royal Lepage Realty Centre.

This move was needed to provide our clients with increased customer service. Our address and management stays the same with our ultra modern office at 2150 Hurontario Street, just north of the QEW. What did change are the many different opportuniities and customer service that Royal Lepage can offer including world wide exposure and relocation services.
Royal LePage has been a provider of real estate services since 1913. Our name is recognized Canada-wide as a leader in the industries in which we operate. The Company has emerged from a three year restructuring program with a strong balance sheet and innovative programs.

It all started in 1913 with a man named Albert E. LePage, a Canadian.
Albert LePage revolutionized the real estate industry in the country by being the first agent in Toronto to turn buying and selling homes into an accessible and professional enterprise. He actively sought clients through follow-up inquiries, took buyers from house to house by car and used descriptive ads in newspapers -- all industry standards today. He was also instrumental in establishing the Toronto Real Estate Board which helped raise the standards of the industry. By the time he retired in 1953, Mr. LePage had moved the company beyond the residential market and into home building and the subdivision and sale of estates.
Albert E. LePage began with a vision of what a company with his name on the door (and the words 'For Sale' on a sign) should represent: impeccable professionalism, principled conduct and the highest moral and ethical standards. Today, more than 80 years later, these principles still guide us in everything we do.
Here, at a glance, is how we got where we are today:
- 1955 - 1960 commercial division developed
- By 1967, A.E. LePage had expanded beyond Toronto and by 1970, beyond Ontario through a series of mergers and acquisitions
- A series of purchases from 1970 to 1976 gave LePage a residential brokerage presence from British Columbia to Quebec
- In 1974, the company moved into real estate development with the incorporation of
Canlea Ltd.
- In 1984, A.E. LePage and Royal Trust merged their real estate brokerage and fee business, naming the new company Royal LePage
- In 1987 Royal LePage became a 54% owned division within the Trilon Financial Group
- Today we are a privately owned company.
About our Future
Royal LePage is Canada’s fastest growing real estate franchisor with over 8000 sales representatives and staff in more than 550 offices from coast-to-coast.
